What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Unlike older keys, modern car keys have chips in them that are unique to each vehicle. This keeps thieves from taking the key and then turning on the car.

Transponder Codes

Like its name suggests, transponders send out an encoded signal that contains the four-digit code when it is questioned by air traffic control. This signal is known as an SQUAWK code and it is the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to transmit an exact message to the air traffic control system in the event of an emergency or to inform controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is not able to speak on the radio. They are vital for safe flying.

Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar queries with an identifier code. This allows ATC to locate an aircraft on a busy screen. Transponders can be found in various modes that vary in how they respond to interrogation. Mode A transmits the code only, while mode C includes altitude data. Mode S transponders send more specific information, including callsigns and positions. This is useful in airspace that is crowded.

A common sight is a small beige box under the seat of a pilot in most aircraft. It is a transponder, and it is set to transmit the SQUAWK code when the airplane is activated by air traffic control. The transponder may be set to the 'ON,' ALT or SBY (standby position) positions.
