There is a national shortage of medications to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems and increased global demand.

Titration

A highly experienced psychiatrist consultant will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your ADHD. This includes medical history and an assessment using the common adhd titration uk rating scales and questionnaires.

After your evaluation, you will be informed if medication would be beneficial for your situation. This will take place during your follow-up appointment (which can be scheduled in person, via video link or via phone). Your physician will explain to you the various options for medication and, if you choose to begin taking medication, we will suggest titrating the dose to optimise the balance of benefits and side effects for you.

This process can take several weeks and it involves gradually altering your child’s medication until the appropriate balance is achieved. It's not uncommon to have to titrate as high as three different medicines before you can find the one that best fits your child's ADHD. Parents must be involved in this titration process and keep a close eye on their child's behavior to inform the doctor if the medicine is helping or causing side effects.

If you decide to return to NHS care the medication you take will be provided with a prescription from a private pharmacy that you'll need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fee). You'll be required to attend six monthly appointments to monitor your medication. This includes pulse and blood pressure readings. Annual reviews are also mandatory.

Follow-up appointments

Once the assessment has been completed you will be able to make follow up appointments with your psychiatrist, if necessary. The appointment is typically conducted via zoom video call. However, in some instances, it could be possible for an audio-only appointment to be conducted (again at an additional cost).

We will then discuss the options for treatment and then decide on the most appropriate, customized ADHD medication adjustment. This will include a discussion and review of your medication dose and any adverse effects you might be experiencing. The cost for these titration consultations is PS150 for face-to face sessions and PS60 for online or telephone video consultations. Medication costs are additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The psychiatrist will ask questions regarding your family history, the impact of your ADHD symptoms on your life, and any relationship problems or mental health issues you might be suffering from. ADHD can be a genetic condition, and it's vital to look into your family's history in order to determine if you're at a higher chance of developing this disorder.

During the assessment, it is essential to be truthful and open with the doctor in the sense that they will be using the information you provide to determine if you are able to meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is a crucial step, since a wrong diagnosis could result in a prescription for medication that is not appropriate.

We recommend that if you are unsure of your preferences, you talk with your GP prior to scheduling your private examination. Certain providers have different guidelines regarding whether they require the submission of a GP letter. Check if your GP accepts the Shared Care Agreement, which means you will be referred to them when you leave the clinic for medication prescription.

Medication

If you are being titrated, the medication will consist of a mixture of stimulants and nonstimulant medications. The combination will be carefully tested and monitored to find the best combination for you, taking into consideration any existing conditions you have. The titration process may be lengthy and may need several additional appointments before you are stable on your dose.

Depending on the kind of medication you're taking, follow-up appointments can be scheduled either monthly or quarterly. You are required to attend an annual health check-up and regular health check-up that includes pulse, blood pressure and weight measurements.

For some individuals it could be because they are content with their medication and don't need any further discussion on their titration. If, however, they do need further discussions about the titration process and treatment plan, it's possible that they will be referred back to the private clinic that performed their initial assessment. If this occurs, the titration appointment will be included in the consultation fee and they will receive their medication on a private prescription (see Consultation fees above). This can cost more than prescriptions from the NHS because the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
