Apple Unlocks Your Car With Messages

Apple's Car Key lets you lock your vehicle and start it using an iPhone or Apple Watch compatible. You can also share access with family and friends -- a one-time gift or a regular arrangement, securely encrypted and handled through Messages.

What is the key blank?

At the annual Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC, Apple introduced an innovative way to unlock and start your car with the iPhone. Apple Car Key uses Bluetooth to connect with your car. Apple Car Key uses the accelerometer of the phone to track your vehicle's proximity. This technology lets drivers keep their phones in their pockets even when the vehicle is locked. It can also be used when the phone is in an armband or tilted.

The feature isn't available on all cars yet. The feature is currently only available on select Mercedes and BMW models. The list includes 2021 and 2022 BMW 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 Series, the X5, and X7 SUVs, and the i4, i8, and iX electric vehicles. Mercedes-Benz offers Car Key compatibility for its E-Class sedans and SUVs in 2023.

In contrast to third-party digital keys that require special hardware in the car and an app specifically designed for the phone, Apple Car Key works via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Ultra Wideband (UWB). The latter is faster than NFC and has built-in protections against relay attacks that could cause phones to be locked even when they're not in close proximity. Apple Car Key requires an iPhone XS running iOS 12.2 and a new Apple Watch Series 5 with software 7.5.

Once paired, once connected, the iPhone can unlock and open doors and windows, start the car, change settings and use Express Mode. Express Mode lets drivers keep their iPhone in their pocket while unlocking the car with a single tap on the lock key, as long as they are wearing an Apple Watch or have Apple CarPlay installed.

Once a car is set up with Car Key, its digital keys can be shared with family and friends through iMessage. You can also temporarily grant access to someone who is house-sitting. Those temporary keys are tokenized within the Wallet app, similar to credit cards, hotel room keys and IDs.

Tokenized access to a car also comes with security advantages, since only the owner's phone and token are able to unlock the car.

It is dependent on the model, but the features could include passive entry, where the car locks and begins automatically when you enter the vehicle with your mobile device. Also, remote capabilities, which allow you to control the car from a distance during an emergency situation or when you don't want your hands to be employed. Siri can be used to unlock and authenticate the car, or you can use a passcode, Touch ID or FaceID.
