Saab cars made since 1994 feature an immobilizer mechanism built on coded keys. A new transponder is required for addition of a second key, and special programming. This is usually done at the dealer using a special Tech2 diagnostic tool.

Transponder key

The transponder key is a piece of hardware with an electronic chip that sends a signal back to the car when it is inserted into the ignition.
